Dear Parents, Thank you for the thoughtful Valentine's gifts.

February 14th-

Wednesday Feb. 14 is Ash Wednesday
Guidelines for Ash Wednesday.  Every person 14 years of age or older must abstain from meat (and items made with meat) on Ash Wednesday, Good Friday, and all the Fridays of Lent. Every person between the age of 18 and 59 (beginning of 60th year) must fast (eating only ONE substantial meal) on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday.

What are you supposed to eat on Ash Wednesday?

You can not eat meat on Ash Wednesday, which marks 40 days before Easter and the beginning of Lent. According to the Catholic law of abstinence, Catholics aged 14 and older must refrain from meat on Fridays  during this 40-day period, as well as Ash Wednesday.

Why do people put ashes on their forehead?

Ash Wednesday derives its name from the practice of blessing ashes made from palm branches blessed on the previous year's Palm Sunday, and placing them on the heads of participants to the accompaniment of the words "Repent, and believe in the Gospel" or "Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return".

Why do we fast for 40 days during Lent?

Some Catholics keep a more rigid version of the fast. The most notable and well-known practice is abstaining from meat on Fridays, sometimes in addition to giving up something else for Lent

What is the purpose of the ash on Ash Wednesday?

Wednesday Feb 14  is Ash Wednesday, the day many Christians mark as the first day of Lent, the time of reflection and penitence leading up to Easter Sunday. ... As they “impose” or “dispense” the ashes, the pastor or priest reminds each Christian of Genesis 3:19: “For dust you are and to dust you shall return.”

Can you eat eggs for Lent?

Yes, you may eat eggs on Fridays during Lent. It is only red meat (in the US, that mainly means beef, chicken, and pork) which is not allowed.

Can you eat chicken for Lent?

Yes. Under current law, the only days that Catholics are required to abstain from meat are Ash Wednesday and all the Fridays in Lent (which includes Good Friday). That leaves 6 out of every 7 days that chicken can be eaten. If you are trying to ask about those Fridays in Lent, then the answer is no.
